On purchasing your new computer:
Your Vista/Windows 7 checklist:
Of the Vista flavors,
home users should buy Home Premium; business users should buy Business; and if you are one of those wanting the best of both worlds buy Ultimate. Everyone should skip Home Basic altogether.
Of the Windows 7 flavors,
there's Home Premium, Business and Ultimate (the above recommendations apply).
If you are opting for the 64bit version, verify that your printer and any software [Read: older] that you want to load are compatible.
Windows loves RAM (random access memory), Vista and 7 really love RAM! At a minimum get 3GB of RAM, more is better. RAM is relatively inexpensive and it's better to load up now.
Most any computer that you purchase -- with the above statements in mind -- will run circles around your current computer. Any of the current crop of CPU's (AMD or Intel) are fine. Photography buffs will want a card reader. You'll get a DVD burner for data backup and recording home movies. You'll get a huge hard drive. Did I say how much faster?
Windows 7 launched October 2009 has shown improvements over Vista. It is similar to Vista and the above recommendations apply.
